Piano Bench Height: The Setting Most Beginners Get Wrong

Nobody adjusts the bench in the first week. It arrives, it gets sat on, and whatever height it happens to be becomes the height you play at. Then, a month later, the outer fingers of both hands ache after every session and the conclusion is that you have weak hands.

Piano bench height is the cheapest thing to fix in a setup and one of the most common causes of tension. This guide covers the three measurements that matter, the checks that take ten seconds, and the adjustment for children that adults almost always skip.

Products and prices referenced here come from TheONE's product pages on 28 September 2026. This is not an independent test.

Why the seat decides how your hands behave

The height of the seat sets the height of your forearms, which sets the angle of your wrists, which determines whether your fingers can move freely or have to work against a locked hand. A bench that is a few centimetres too low does not feel uncomfortable at first; it just quietly moves the work from your fingers into your forearm.

That is why the symptom appears later than the cause. Tension builds over sessions rather than within one, and by the time it is noticeable it has become the way you play. Music health organisations such as BAPAM treat instrument setup and playing position as primary factors in the strain injuries musicians report, and the piano is unusual in that the fix costs nothing.

The same logic applies to stability. A seat that rocks or swivels forces your feet to compensate, which pulls your weight off the pedals and out of the playing position. That is the practical reason a fixed bench beat an office chair, even though the office chair looks adjustable: the closest surfaces the Health and Safety Executive describes for musculoskeletal disorders all come back to a stable base and a neutral working posture.

How high should a piano bench be?

Forearms level with the keys, shoulders relaxed.

That single test covers most of it. A quick approximation is that the top of the seat should sit just below your knees when you stand beside it, but the forearm check is the one to trust.

Run it in this order. Sit down, drop your arms, then bring your forearms up to the keys without lifting your shoulders. If the forearms slope down towards the keys, the bench is too low and your wrists will take the strain. If they slope up, the bench is too high and you will find your shoulders creeping towards your ears within ten minutes. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's ergonomics guidance frames the same idea for seated work: the position should be sustainable without effort, not held in place by tension.

Adjust and repeat until level, then play for five minutes and check again, because posture drifts as you concentrate. Anyone who has spent time at a desk will recognise the pattern, which the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety describes for workstation setup: the correct position is the one you can hold without effort, not the one that looks best in a photograph.

How far from the piano should you sit?

Close enough for the pedals; far enough for your elbows.

A hand span of clearance between your body and the keyboard is a reasonable working distance. Sit on the front half of the seat with both feet flat, so your weight is over your feet rather than tipped back onto your lower back.

Beginners tend to sit too close, because it feels like control. The result is that the elbows are pinned against the ribs and the hands have to reach sideways to cover the keyboard, which is precisely the awkward position that repeated movement turns into strain. Moving the bench back ten centimetres usually makes an awkward passage feel easier within a session. That pattern, repeating a movement in an awkward position, is what the NHS describes as repetitive strain injury, and it is why a neutral seated position matters more than any accessory.

The pedal foot changes the calculation slightly. On a model with a sustain pedal, the right foot needs to rest on it without you sliding forward, so set the distance with the foot in position rather than after. If you are working out which pedals fit which TheONE model, the standalone pedal fits the TOK, TON, NEX and Sing Pro, while the wooden stand with three pedals is designed for the Sing Pro, TON and NEX.

Can children use an adult bench?

Only if the height adjusts or they sit on a firm cushion.

A child whose feet do not reach the floor will slide backwards and lean forward to compensate, which builds the wrong posture from the first lesson. Adjust the seat and put a footrest under their feet.

The check is the same one adults use, with one addition: both feet must be supported, not dangling. If the bench cannot go low enough, a firm cushion on the seat is a better fix than letting them sit forward on the edge, because the cushion keeps the base stable. The practical version of this for a portable setup is to adjust both the stand and the seat together, since raising one without the other changes the forearm angle you just set.

Two habits help in shared households. Mark the two settings you actually use, so switching between a child and an adult takes seconds rather than a re-measurement. And if the bench is shared with a keyboard stand, remember that the instrument height was set for one person — if the difference in size is large, the stand may need adjusting too, which is covered in piano stand.

FAQ

How high should a piano bench be?

Set it so your forearms are roughly level with the keys when your shoulders are relaxed. That usually puts the top of the seat just below your knees when you stand next to it. If your elbows drop below the keys, the bench is too low.

How far from the piano should you sit?

Far enough that your elbows are not pinned against your ribs, which is usually a hand span of clearance behind your knees. Sit forward on the front half of the seat, with both feet flat on the floor so your weight is over your feet rather than your lower back.

Can children use an adult piano bench?

Only if it adjusts or if they sit on a firm cushion. A child whose feet do not reach the floor will slide back and lean forward to compensate, which builds the wrong posture from the first lesson. Adjust the seat and put a stool or footrest under their feet.

Next step

Spend ten minutes on the three measurements before your next session: seat height, distance from the keys, and both feet supported. If a piece that felt hard suddenly feels easier, the bench was the problem, and you have just removed it for free.
