To move a smart-piano performance into a DAW, first determine what your app can actually export. If its recording menu offers MIDI or Standard MIDI File (.mid), save that file and import it into a software-instrument track. If the app offers only video, audio or social sharing, connect the piano directly to the DAW and record a new MIDI performance in real time.
This verification step matters because “record and share” does not automatically mean “export MIDI.” App features can also differ by operating system, region, subscription, piano model and app version. Step 2: export and verify the MIDI file

Use a clear filename such as song-title_take-03_2026-08-20.mid. Then open the destination and confirm that the file exists, has the expected extension and is not zero bytes. Keep a copy of the original app recording until the DAW import has been tested.
For privacy and reliability, local storage or a trusted cloud account is usually preferable to sending unfinished performances through public messaging services. If you use email or chat, confirm that the service did not wrap the file in an archive or replace it with a download link that expires.
Step 3: transfer the file to your DAW device
The transfer method does not alter the MIDI performance as long as the file arrives intact. Common options include:
- Local Files: best when the app and DAW run on the same tablet or computer.
- Cloud storage: convenient between mobile and desktop devices; wait for syncing to finish before importing.
- AirDrop or nearby sharing: useful between compatible devices on the same platform.

Preserve timing without over-correcting it
After import, listen once before editing. Verify the first note’s position and check whether the performance drifts relative to the project grid. A mismatch may come from the app’s tempo assumptions, a count-in, free-time playing or a file that contains its own tempo events.
Quantization can tighten rhythm, but applying 100 percent correction to every note may remove natural phrasing. Try a moderate strength, limit correction to selected passages or edit obvious mistakes by hand. For expressive classical playing, preserving small timing differences may matter more than perfect grid alignment.
Velocity edits should follow the musical phrase. If everything sounds too hard or too soft, first adjust the virtual instrument’s velocity response rather than flattening the performance.
Why imported notes may sound different
A MIDI file has no fixed tone. The DAW may assign a generic piano, interpret program-change messages or load no instrument at all. Choose a software instrument manually and adjust its response.
Missing sustain may indicate that the app did not export controller data, the pedal was connected incorrectly or the receiving instrument is ignoring the message. Unexpected extra notes may come from accompaniment or multiple MIDI channels. Open the event list and temporarily mute channels to identify the source.

There is no MIDI option
The feature may not exist in that app version or recording mode. Do not follow instructions written for a different app. Record directly into the DAW via USB MIDI instead.
The file cannot be found
Repeat the export to a known local folder and watch for a success message. Check file permissions, available storage and the device’s recent-files list. Search for both .mid and .midi.
The DAW rejects the file

The file imports but makes no sound
