First, identify the phone's physical connector and supported USB host behavior. Some manufacturers provide an OTG control in settings, while others manage the connection automatically. For a five-pin interface, the piano's MIDI OUT normally feeds the interface's MIDI IN; follow the interface labeling and instructions. This is a separate configuration, not a reason to buy a USB cable for a piano that lacks a USB MIDI connection.

Notes Arrive, but Where Should the Sound Come From?
USB MIDI supplies performance instructions. The app may use those instructions for scoring, notation, or generating sound. It does not necessarily receive the piano's internal audio, and not every lesson app includes a software piano voice.
If the app generates sound, check its volume and the phone's selected output. If you are listening to the physical piano instead, confirm how spoken instructions or backing tracks will be heard. Headphones connected to the piano do not automatically include phone audio.
Some combinations provide USB audio or a documented audio input, but that capability must be verified separately. A phone may also change its output after a USB audio device is attached. Test the intended listening path at low volume before assuming that MIDI has stopped.
A noticeable delay with correctly displayed notes is a different problem from failed USB detection. Keep the working data path and investigate the software and listening route instead of repeatedly replacing the OTG adapter.
Power and Charging Need Their Own Trial
The phone acting as host may supply power to an attached accessory. A bus-powered controller can therefore place different demands on it than a self-powered piano. Use the instrument's specified supply where required; do not improvise power connections.
A powered hub may help some supported arrangements, but simultaneous phone charging and USB hosting is device- and adapter-dependent. A socket marked for power does not guarantee that your exact phone can charge while maintaining MIDI input.
Add the charging arrangement only after the basic connection works. Repeat note input and audio tests, then run a normal lesson. Check whether the device remains connected, the phone maintains an acceptable charge level, and any power warning appears.
If a warning, unusual heat, or unstable connection develops, stop using that arrangement and consult the manufacturers' guidance. Do not treat repeated disconnects as something the learner should simply work around.
Keep a Reconnection Test in the Setup Routine
Finish by closing and reopening the app, disconnecting and reconnecting normally, and checking behavior after the phone sleeps. A connection that survives one note but cannot be started reliably tomorrow is not yet a useful practice setup.
Save the phone model, Android version, app version, cable and adapter details, and working input selection. If support is needed, report whether the failure is detection, permission, note reception, audio, or power. This short record is more useful than describing every problem as “OTG does not work.”
