Select a straightforward snare sound on the module and listen through a suitable wired output at a comfortable level. Start without backing music so quiet notes are not hidden. Keep master volume unchanged throughout the test.
Play four separated soft strokes, four medium strokes, and four comfortable accents. An accent should stand out relative to the surrounding notes; it does not need to be your strongest possible hit. Repeat with the other hand.
Listen for three distinguishable levels rather than a particular numerical velocity. If the module has a useful velocity display, it can provide supporting feedback, but a number is not a universal loudness measurement across modules and sounds.
Keep the strike location reasonably consistent within the pad's normal playing area. A change in zone, accidental rim contact, or a particularly sensitive spot can confuse a dynamics test. Do not move randomly around the head while deciding whether your touch is consistent.
Why Do Soft and Strong Hits Sound Too Similar?
The cause may be the stroke, trigger configuration, selected sound, or processing. First repeat the three-level test with one hand and a simple voice. If the result remains compressed into one level, inspect the documented settings instead of forcing larger movements.
Sensitivity affects how strongly a pad responds; threshold determines which weak signals are ignored; a velocity curve changes the relationship between the detected strike and response. These are different controls. Raising sensitivity may make soft strokes louder without giving you better separation.
Roland's TD-17 documentation, for example, distinguishes these parameters and includes curves that deliberately reduce dynamic variation. Choose a slow, comfortable metronome pulse and play one stroke per beat. Use four soft notes followed by four medium notes, then return to soft. Keep the same spacing throughout the change.
Use a smaller preparatory motion for the softer level and enough controlled motion for the stronger one. Let the stick rebound naturally rather than squeezing it into the mesh. The goal is a repeatable sound difference, not a fixed stick height that every player must copy.

Move One Accent Through Four Even Notes
Play four even strokes with alternating hands: right, left, right, left. Keep all four comfortably soft at first. Then accent only the first note while the remaining three stay quiet.
Repeat with the accent on the second, third, and fourth notes, one position at a time. Do not change the sticking or tempo when the accent moves. You are testing whether a selected stroke can become prominent without pulling neighboring strokes up with it.

Capital letters mark accents here; lowercase letters mark quieter strokes. They do not mean different sticking techniques. If the note after an accent keeps becoming loud, practice just the accented stroke and the following quiet stroke, with a pause before repeating.
Mesh rebound can make an uncontrolled follow-up stroke easy to miss physically while it remains audible. Watch for an unintended second contact, but do not immediately suppress the problem with trigger rejection settings. First establish whether the stick actually struck again.

Count β1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.β Play the snare part alone first: quiet on 1-and, stronger on 2, quiet on 3-and, stronger on 4. Leave the other counts empty. Hear two soft-to-strong pairs within the measure.
Once that contrast is dependable, add a steady hand pattern on the hi-hat or ride. Keep that layer quiet enough to hear the snare detail. Introduce kick notes only after the hands remain predictable; adding the full kit immediately makes the source of a lost ghost note harder to identify.
The ghost notes should remain intentional and audible in your practice mix, not disappear below detection. If you can only preserve them by making the backbeat painfully loud, reduce the overall contrast and revisit the sound and trigger response.
Practice Note: A Quiet Note Vanishes Beside Another Pad
Suppose a soft snare note sounds reliably alone but disappears when played with the kick or a cymbal. That is different from failing to produce a soft stroke at all. Repeat the snare alone, then the same snare stroke with the other pad, keeping the effort similar.
Listen for masking first: another sound may cover the snare even though it triggered. A module display or unprocessed recording, where available, can help distinguish an unheard note from an undetected event.
If the note is actually missing, consult the module's guidance on crosstalk and rejection settings. Aggressive rejection can affect intended combined playing on some systems. Do not disable protection across the whole kit; adjust only through the documented process and retest unwanted triggers as well as the intended notes.
If the controlled comparison stays inconsistent, stop chasing the problem with technique changes and seek model-specific support. Practicing progressively harder ghost notes would hide the limitation rather than teach the intended dynamic control.
Build a Crescendo Without Speeding Up
Play eight evenly spaced strokes, starting softly and growing toward a comfortable accent level. Then reverse the direction. Keep the endpoint below any effort that causes tension or unsafe volume.
Listen for a gradual trend rather than demanding eight perfectly equal loudness increments. Many electronic sounds change character across velocity ranges, so perceived loudness need not follow a mathematically even staircase.
If the first few notes are all quiet and the last one suddenly jumps, shorten the task to four notes. If the descent loses its quiet ending, work downward separately rather than repeating an uncontrolled rise and fall.
Place a pause after each attempt. This helps you hear the shape and prevents a dynamics exercise from quietly turning into an endurance roll. Keep head tension within the pad manufacturer's instructions; tightening mesh simply to obtain more rebound is not a substitute for control.
Use the Contrast in a Song, Not Every Measure
Choose a familiar groove and play one section with restrained accents, then another with a more pronounced backbeat. Keep the tempo unchanged. The difference should support the section's character without erasing the quieter subdivisions.
Record a short example at unchanged settings. Ask three questions: are the quiet notes present, are the intended accents clear, and does the pulse remain steady? Pick one correction for the next session instead of increasing speed and complexity together.
